What is the significance of Valentine's Day?
Valentine's Day is a day of joy, celebration, and spending quality time with loved ones for the majority of people. Most people imagine a romantic St. Valentine who wrote the first love poems for his beloved and made Valentine's Day famous in his honor after his death, but the reality is quite different.
Three St Valentines are said to have died on February 14th, according to historical records from the Bollandists. In the years 269-270 AD, two of them were executed by Roman Emperor Claudius Gothicus, at a time when persecuting Christians was the norm.
The first Valentinus was a Roman priest who was arrested during the reign of Gothicus and imprisoned by Asterius, an aristocrat. The second Valentinus was a Roman priest who was arrested during the reign of Gothicus and imprisoned by Asterius. Asterius promised to convert if Valentinus could cure his foster-blindness daughter's while the preacher was preaching. The priest's mission was completed, and Asterius' entire family was baptized. The emperor, on the other hand, ordered their execution. Only Valentinus, however, was beheaded, and his body was buried on Via Flaminia, where a chapel was later built.
Valentinus the third was a bishop in Terni, Umbria, Italy. His tale is eerily similar to that of the second priest. He debated a potential convert, healed his son, was beheaded on Gothicus' orders, and buried along the Via Flaminia. The Bollandists believe that the second and third Valentinus were most likely the same person whose legend became popular in different tales in Rome and Terni due to the uncanny similarities. There are many stories, but based on the above, you might conclude that none of these African, Roman, or Umbrian Saint Valentines were lovers or romantics in the traditional sense.
With the passage of time, tales of St Valentine performing secret marriage rituals began to circulate. When Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men because men without families made better soldiers, stories circulated about St Valentine performing secret marriage rituals. Another legend claims that St Valentine was killed for assisting Christians in escaping Roman prisons, while another claims that the saint fell in love with his jailor's daughter and sent her a message signed "From your Valentine" before his death, an expression that is still used today. These tales, however, have no historical basis, according to Bollandists.
