Round Annapurna Circuit Overview

The Annapurna Circuit Trek provides one of Nepal’s most popular trekking experiences, circling the entire Annapurna mountain area and walking past the famous Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters which is one of the highest trekking passes in the world. It was opened to foreigners in 1977, and this path stretches to about 300 kilometers and provides stunning landscape views, from lush rice terraces and deep river valleys to alpine forests and mountain deserts. Along the way, you will also get to enjoy breathtaking views of mountains peaks like Annapurna I (8,091m), Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Manaslu (8,163m), Tilicho Peak (7,134m), and many others.

Detailed Itinaries

DAY 1

Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)

Once you arrive in Kathmandu, a representative of the Go Nepal Travel Tours and Treks Pvt. Ltd.  will pick you up at the airport and take you to the hotel. In the afternoon you can rest or visit the office  for a local tea. In the evening, a welcome dinner will be organized by us Go Nepal Travel Treks and Tours Pvt. Ltd. For dinner you will enjoy delicious Nepali cuisine. We will spend the night in Kathmandu.

Day 1 - Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)
DAY 2

Kathmandu: Sightseeing and trek Preparation

On day 2 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, after breakfast, we began our tour to some of the most historical and spiritual attractions of Kathmandu, which are also classified as UNESCO World Heritage. We will visit the historic Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous 'Monkey Temple' (Swayambhunath) and the Buddhist Sanctuary (Bouddhanath), which is also one of the largest stupas in the world. In the evening we will meet others in the hotel and discuss our trip for the next day. We will spend the night today also in Kathmandu.

Day 2 - Kathmandu: Sightseeing and trek Preparation
DAY 3

Drive to Khudi (800m/2,624ft): 7- 8 hours

On day 3 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, we begin our journey in the hills by a long road along the Trishuli River. On the way, we get to admire the terraced farms and beautiful cabins. After arriving at an intersection in Mugling, we will continue straight to Pokhara. In Dumre, we leave the previous road and head north towards Besisahar. A half-hour trip from Besisahar takes us to Khudi, which is the starting point of our hike. Alternatively, if we are up for it, we can also get off at Besisahar, then walk for an hour to get to Khudi by the road. Khudi gives us a first glimpse of the magnificent range of Manaslu. We will spend the night in Khudi.

Day 3 - Drive to Khudi (800m/2,624ft): 7- 8 hours
DAY 4

Khudi to Sirung (2200m/7216 ft): 6 - 7 hours

Day 4 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, will be our first day of walking which consists of walking past some suspension bridges and waterfalls, including several ascents and descents through rice fields and a forest. Initially, the walk will be gradual but is then followed by steeper paths. The mountain views we see from Khudi seem much closer now. Before reaching the village of Sirung, we passed through a camp belonging to Tamang, Taranche. We admire the close-up views of Sirung in the Nadi Chuli and Manaslu mountains. We will spend the night in Sirung.

Day 4 - Khudi to Sirung (2200m/7216 ft): 6 - 7 hours
DAY 5

Sirung to Jagat (1,300m/4265ft): 6 - 7 hours

On day 5 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, we leave Sirung for Jagat on a somewhat easier path. We leave behind the village terraces and follow the path through the forests, ferns, and woodlands. On the forest path, we will see many types of birds. We also walk past several small towns and some temples along the way. We cross a suspension bridge in Sangu Khola in Mipra and then Syange in the Marshyangdi River. There is also a waterfall near the bridge which we can take pictures of. Now our road will cross Marshyangdi River and we will walk past the bridge before reaching Jagat. We will spend the night in Jagat.

Day 5 - Sirung to Jagat (1,300m/4265ft): 6 - 7 hours
DAY 6

Jagat to Dharapani (1,960m/6,430ft): 7-8 hours

On day 6 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, after breakfast, we began our walk slowly. The path of Jagat descends towards the river, then walks past a forest. Another climb leads us to a sharp cliff facing the coast. On the way, we enter to Chyamje which provides us with a magnificent scenery of mountain ranges of Annapurna. After crossing a suspension bridge, we climb abruptly towards the slippery and physically difficult road that leads to Sattale. 

Following a succession of paths made with stones, we descend to a grass bank that leads us to Tal. When we walk away from Tal, the road becomes rocky and twisting. Then we approach the wooded village of Karte. After some trek along the waterfalls and cliffs we finally reach Dharapani after crossing a suspension bridge. We will spend the night in Dharapani.

 

Day 6 - Jagat to Dharapani (1,960m/6,430ft): 7-8 hours
DAY 7

Dharapani to Chame (2,710m/8,891ft): 5 - 6 hours

On day 7 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, today, we will cross some wooded ridges to go to Chame, which is the headquarters of the Manang district. Throughout the walk we can admire the spectacular views of the Himalayas, including Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II and Annapurna IV (7,525 m / 24, 68 m). Today we also see small springs where we can dive in to relieve our tired muscles. We will spend the night in Chame.

Day 7 - Dharapani to Chame (2,710m/8,891ft): 5 - 6 hours
DAY 8

Chame to Pisang (3,300m/10824ft): 5 - 6 hours

On day 8 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, we will trek in a narrow and steep path through a dense forest that will lead us to the curved rock, which rises 1,500 meters from the river. This is probably the steepest part of the Marshyangdi Valley, so steep that the path is dug into the vertical rock, so it may be difficult. After passing this rock, the valley opens to show majestic views. And when the valley widens to show its views, we will get to see Paungda Danda, which is a huge crag that rises more than 1500 meters above the path. We walk for a while before reaching Lower Pisang where we will spend the night.

Day 8 - Chame to Pisang (3,300m/10824ft): 5 - 6 hours
DAY 9

Pisang to Manang: 6 - 7 hours

On day 9 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, there are two routes to reach Manang, and we will follow the path that takes us to Upper Pisang through Geru. This path gives us amazing views to see the beautiful landscape and the majestic mountains, including Annapurna and Pisang. We will also begin to notice a contrast in the landscape and vegetation from this time onwards. The cold and dry climate also creates a much harder environment. We will also do a brief visit to the Barge Monastery, which is the largest monastery in the entire Manang district, and will surely be a memorable part of our trip. We will spend the night in Manang. 

 

Day 9 - Pisang to Manang: 6 - 7 hours
DAY 10

Manang: Acclimatization day

On Day 10 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, we take a short hike to reach either Bhojo Gumba or Gangapurna Lake to stay active and prepare for the path ahead. If we still have enough energy, we can also visit the village of Vraga, where the Himalayan Rescue Association provides helpful information about Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). We will spend the night in Manang.

Day 10 - Manang: Acclimatization day
DAY 11

Manang to Yak Kharka (4,110m/13,484ft): 3 - 4 hours

On day 11 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, From the village of Manang, the path walks past a stream, and climbs to a village of Tenki and continues outside the Marshyangdi Valley by turning the Jarsang Khola Valley to the northwest. The path follows this valley to the north through some grasses and juniper maquis as its altitude gradually increases. The path goes closer to the small town of Ghunsa. Now the path crosses meadows where we can see horses and yaks graze. After crossing a small river on a wooden bridge, the path goes past an old Mani wall in a pleasant meadow, and then joins another small village of Yak Kharka. We will spend the night in Yak Karka.

Day 11 - Manang to Yak Kharka (4,110m/13,484ft): 3 - 4 hours
DAY 12

Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi (4,600m/15,092ft): 3 - 4 hours

On day 12 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, we will have to walk to Thorang Phedi. After walking for a while, we will walk past a suspension bridge and arrive at the town of Ledar. We climb again and pass through high cliffs before reaching Thorang Phedi, which is the last village before the Thorong La pass. On this trip, we are rewarded with one of the best views of Mt. Gundang, Mt. Syagang, Thorung Peak and Mt. Khatungkan. The word Phedi in Nepali is called “foot of a mountain”. We will spend the night in Thorong Phedi. 

 

Day 12 - Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi (4,600m/15,092ft): 3 - 4 hours
DAY 13

Thorong Phedi to Muktinath (3,800m/12,467ft) via Thorong La pass (5416m/17764ft): 7 - 8 hours

On Day 13 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, we will walk past the Thorong La Pass which is one of the highest passes in the world and will be our main goal for the day. We will cross from east to west (from Manang to Muktinath), which is considered the easiest and safest direction. We start our climb very early in the morning, around 3 AM. The ascent will be difficult, but reaching the top makes all the effort feel worth it. We’ll have some time to take photos and enjoy the incredible views before descending to the Muktinath Valley at the foot of the pass. We will spend the night in Muktinath.

Day 13 - Thorong Phedi to Muktinath (3,800m/12,467ft) via Thorong La pass (5416m/17764ft): 7 - 8 hours
DAY 14

Muktinath to Marpha (2,670m/8,760ft): 4 - 5 hours

On day 14 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, we will tour Muktinath for some time. Muktinath is an important pilgrimage for Hindus and Buddhists. In the morning, we will visit a Vishnu temple and a gompa. Going down from the village of Ranipauwa on the steep hill, we go to Kagbeni, then we arrive at Jomsom to finally reach Marpha. The path is quite surreal today with the views surrounding us as we walk on a plateau over the Kali Gandaki River, which is the deepest gorge in the world. The landscape of this region resembles Tibet. Marpha is also known as the apple capital of Nepal, where you can taste different apple products. Marpha's local apple brandy is famous throughout Nepal. We will spend the night in Marpha.

Day 14 - Muktinath to Marpha (2,670m/8,760ft): 4 - 5 hours
DAY 15

Marpha to Kalopani (2,530 m/8,300 ft): 5 - 6 hours

On day 15 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, from Marpha, we take a new route to reach Kalopani via the village of Chokhopani. Today, we meet traditional villages of the Thakali group. We will also see beautiful apple gardens. From here we have a 360 overall view of mountain peaks like Mt. Dhaulagari, Tukuche, Nilgiri, Fang and Annapurna I. From Chokhopani, we continue to Kokhethanti. We walk past a river and cross the newly built road site before reaching Kalopani. We will spend the night in Kalopani.

Day 15 - Marpha to Kalopani (2,530 m/8,300 ft): 5 - 6 hours
DAY 16

Kalopani to Tatopani (1,200m/3,937ft): 6 - 7 hours

On day 16 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, our trip today is mainly downhill. During the first part of today's trek, we will cross the bridge at Ghasa. As we descend, we return to lush subtropical forests. Our path continues along the Rupse Chahara (waterfall). We continue along the eastern shore of Kopchepani through Garpar to a bridge in Dana. In Narchyang Besi, we will also see a power station that supplies electricity to the area. There are bigger cities in this region which we can observe to see the daily life of the local people residing there. When we arrive at Tatopani, we relax and take a bath in the hot springs to relax our tired bodies. We will spend the night in Tatopani.

Day 16 - Kalopani to Tatopani (1,200m/3,937ft): 6 - 7 hours
DAY 17

Tatopani to Ghorepani (2,850m/9,350ft): 7 - 8 hours

On day 17 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, we leave Kali Gandaki and head to the valley of Ghar Khola. The path leads us through terraced farmland surrounded by mountains. We will pass the villages of Shikha and Chitré before arriving in a beautiful forest of rhododendrons. Then after walking past the forest we will arrive at Ghorepani, which is a beautiful hilltop village. We will spend the night in Ghorepani.

Day 17 - Tatopani to Ghorepani (2,850m/9,350ft): 7 - 8 hours
DAY 18

Ghorepani to Poon Hill to Tadapani (2,700m/8,860ft): 6 - 7 hours

On day 18 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, to catch the sunrise over the Himalayas, we will climb early in the morning on the steep path that leads to the viewpoint of Poon Hill (3,210 m), the most popular trekking destination in the Annapurna region. It's also a great vantage point to enjoy the amazing views of Mustang, Pokhara and over 20 of the highest mountains, including the close-up views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. 

The snowy peaks of the high mountains rise above us, glowing beautifully in the morning light. After taking some memorable pictures, we will then make our way back to Gorepani. After a delicious breakfast, we continue our journey eastward, climbing up a nearby ridge. From there, we descend through beautiful rhododendron forests, cross stunning waterfalls, and finally arrive at Tadapani, where we will spend the night.

 

Day 18 - Ghorepani to Poon Hill to Tadapani (2,700m/8,860ft): 6 - 7 hours
DAY 19

Tadapani to Pokhara (827m/2,789ft) via Ghandruk: 5 - 6 hours trek, 1 hour drive

On day 19 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, from Tadapani, we will make a strong descent through the dense and dark forest. This part of the walk will be through a dense forest of old rhododendron trees. When the rhododendrons are in bloom, these forests are transformed into beautiful gardens that make up for a breathtaking view. In the afternoon, depending on the season, we can also get to enjoy flowering cherry blossoms on the slopes on the other side of the ravine. After a few minutes on foot, we will enter the village of Ghandruk, a village inhabited mainly by the Gurung. Here we will enjoy the beautiful narrow views of Fishtail, South Annapurna and Hiunchuli Mountains. We continue on our trek to Nayapul from where we can drive back to Pokhara. We will spend the night in Pokhara.

Day 19 - Tadapani to Pokhara (827m/2,789ft) via Ghandruk: 5 - 6 hours trek, 1 hour drive
DAY 20

Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu: 5-6 hours

On day 20 of our Round Annapurna Circuit, after having breakfast, we bid farewell to the beautiful city of Pokhara which is also known as Lake City of Nepal and head towards Kathmandu. After arriving in Kathmandu, we have the entire day to rest or even visit the beautiful Thamel. To celebrate the success of our trip, we will also have a farewell dinner at night. We will spend the night in Kathmandu.

Day 20 - Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu: 5-6 hours
DAY 21

Final departure

Day 21 of our Round Annapurna Circuit is unfortunately our final day as our exciting, difficult but worth it and eventful adventure on Annapurna in Nepal ends today. A representative of our Go Nepal Travel Tours and Treks Pvt. Ltd. will accompany you to the airport about 3 hours before your scheduled flight. On the way back, you will have plenty of time to plan your next adventure in the wonderful country of Nepal with us Go Nepal Travel Tours and Treks Pvt. Ltd.

Useful Information

  1. During the trek the highest trekking point is Thorung la (5416m, 17770ft) 
  2. The highest camp is Thorung Phedi (4404m, 14450ft). 
  3. On this trek, you will get to see lush beautiful forests and vibrant natural vegetation, with warm and pleasant weather in the lower regions of the Round Annapurna Circuit Trek. The temperature in these areas usually stays between 5 to 10 degrees Celsius, while at higher altitudes, it can drop sharply, reaching as low as minus 20 degrees.
  4. October to early December and late February to April  are the best times for trekking. 
  5. Warm clothing and Sleeping bags that can bear up-to minus 20-40 degree are recommended if you are likely to do Annapurna circuit trek during the winter season. 
  6. In the route  you will find Gurungs, Magars, Brahimns major cultural groups and also found other minor group living in this region. 
  7. Equipment: Duffel bag, Back pack, Rain cover, Hydration Bladder and water bottles, Trekking poles etc.

    • The itinerary for the Annapurna Circuit is anti-clockwise. 
    • You can hike the Annapurna Circuit as part of a group or on your own. 
    • A trekking permit is required for the Annapurna Circuit. 
    • Altitude sickness is a real thing that can happen to you also so be prepared. 
    • Annapurna I is the highest point in the 34 mile long distance, which is east of the Kali Gandaki river's deep George. 
    • The Annapurna mountain area is protected in the Annapurna conservation area, which is the largest protected area in Nepal. 
    • Annapurna is the most dangerous 8000m peak to climb with the fatality to successful climb ratio of 38%.
