Detailed Itinaries

DAY 1

Kathmandu (1300m) - Kerung Border (145 km, 6-7 hours drive)

Early in the morning, we will take a scenic drive to the Kerung Border (Nepal-Tibet Border). After arriving at the border and completing the necessary border formalities at Nepali and Chinese immigration, we then continue driving towards Kerung. We will spend the night at a hotel. 

Day 1 - Kathmandu (1300m) - Kerung Border (145 km, 6-7 hours drive)
DAY 2

Kerung - Tingri (4300m) - Shigatse (390 km)

On day 2 of our Tibet Overland Tour, we will drive uphill to the highest plateau in the world, with amazing views of the Tibetan landscape, providing an amazing feeling of standing on the roof of the world. We will continue the scenic drive, going past over Gyatchu La (5220m), which is the highest pass en route to Lhasa via Lhatse. We will spend the night at a hotel.

Day 2 - Kerung - Tingri (4300m) - Shigatse (390 km)
DAY 3

Shigatse - Lhasa via Gyantse (3650m, 260 km)

On day 3 of our Tibet Overland Tour, we will wake up early in the morning to do sightseeing at the Panchen Lama's Tashilhunpo Monastery. After sightseeing we will drive to Gyantse and visit the Kumbum Stupa and Phalkor Monastery. Then enjoy a full day of picturesque driving, crossing over Karola (5010m) and Kambala (4749m), and seeing the colorful Yamdrok-Tso Lake. We will spend the night at Hotel Yak.

Day 3 - Shigatse - Lhasa via Gyantse (3650m, 260 km)
DAY 4

Sightseeing in Lhasa

On day 4 of our Tibet Overland Tour, we will start our day with a visit to the popular Potala Palace, which was the former winter residence of Dalai Lama, which stands majestically atop Marpo Ri Hill. The palace is known for its intricate architecture, historic artifacts, and breathtaking views of Lhasa. Afterward, we will head to Jokhang Temple, which is the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism, where pilgrims from all over Tibet come to pay their respects. The temple's golden roof and lively murals provide a deep insight into Tibetan culture and religion. We will also spend some time exploring Barkhor Bazaar, which is a lively market encircling the Jokhang Temple, where we can experience the local lifestyle, shop for unique Tibetan handicrafts, and savor the local delicacies there. We will spend the night at a hotel.

DAY 5

More sightseeing in Lhasa

On day 5 of our Tibet Overland Tour, we will continue on our exploration of Lhasa by visiting two of its most significant monasteries. We will begin by visiting Drepung Monastery, which was once the largest monastery in the world and a center of Tibetan Buddhist learning. We will wander through its vast complex of temples, halls, and courtyards, and learn about its rich history and spiritual significance. In the afternoon, we will then visit the next monastery which is Sera Monastery, this monastery is famous for its monk debates on Buddhist doctrines, a unique and lively tradition held in the monastery’s courtyards. We will get the chance to observe the monks engaged in animated discussions and explore the monastery's impressive chapels and assembly halls. We will spend the night overnight at a hotel.

Day 5 - More sightseeing in Lhasa
DAY 6

Lhasa - Xegar/Tingri (4200m, 494 km)

On day 6 of our Tibet Overland Tour, after having breakfast, we will go on a long drive to Xegar (also known as Tingri), passing through some of the most amazing and remote landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau. The drive will take you through vast, open spaces with mountain views in the distance, providing you with numerous photo taking opportunities. You will cross several high mountain passes, including the Gyatso La Pass (5220m), providing an overall 360 views of the Himalayas. Xegar is a small town that serves as a gateway to Mount Everest. We will spend the night at a guest house in Xegar.

Day 6 - Lhasa - Xegar/Tingri (4200m, 494 km)
DAY 7

Xegar to Kyirung (2770m)

On day 7 of our Tibet Overland Tour, after having breakfast, we will continue on our journey towards Kyirung. The drive will take us through beautiful, rocky terrain, descending from the high-altitude Tibetan plateau towards the lush, green valleys near the Nepal border. En route, we will also pass through small villages and see nomadic herders with their yaks. After some time we will reach Kyirung, which is also known as Gyirong, and is a town close to the Nepal border with a mild climate and scenic beauty. We will spend the night at a hotel in Kyirung.

Day 7 - Xegar to Kyirung (2770m)
DAY 8

Kyirung to Kerung Border to Kathmandu (395 km)

On day 8 of our Tibet Overland Tour, early in the morning, we drive to the Kerung Border. After completing the necessary border formalities, cross back into Nepal. We will continue driving towards Kathmandu, while also enjoying the changing landscapes as we descend from the Tibetan plateau into the lush green valleys of Nepal. We will arrive in Kathmandu by late afternoon or early evening. You will rest up as you prepare for your flight.

Day 8 - Kyirung to Kerung Border to Kathmandu (395 km)

Your Kathmandu City Tour will begin at 9 a.m from Go Nepal Travels, which is located in Thamel, Kathmandu. From Go Nepal Travels, you’ll be comfortably transported in a private car that you can choose as per your group size, thus providing you with a smooth, comfortable and enjoyable journey. You will also be accompanied by an English-speaking tour guide to whom you can talk to if you need any help, you’ll then explore some of the most significant landmarks in Kathmandu, including many UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ancient temples, and vibrant marketplaces. This tour will typically last for about 6-8 hours, with an estimated end time between 3 PM to 5 PM after you start your journey from 9 AM, which includes: Pashupatinat Temple, Bouddhanath Stupa, Swoyambhunath Stupa and Patan Durbar Square.
