After arriving at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, you will be greeted by a representative of our Go Nepal Travel Tours and Treks who will drop you off at the hotel you will be staying. After check-in at the hotel, you can rest and refresh yourselves. In the evening, there will be a welcome dinner organized by us Go Nepal Travel Tours and Treks Pvt. Ltd. where you will enjoy delicious Nepali cuisine. We will spend the night in Kathmandu.
On day 2 of our Kailash Tour Via Simikot, we visit Durbar Square, Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Stupa, and Bouddhanath Stupa, all of which are World Heritage Sites. The Durbar Square highlights the life of royalty in old times. The Pashupatinath Temple is one of the most important sacred sites for all Hindus. Swayambhunath is also known as the monkey temple and the Baudhanath stupa is one of the largest stupas in the world. In the evening, we introduce ourselves to our fellow participants and discuss our trip to the Kailash Tour via Simikot. We will spend the night today also in Kathmandu.
On day 3 of our Kailash Tour Via Simikot, after our short eventful stay in Kathmandu, we now take a one-hour flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, which is a town located in western Nepal. This town is near the border between Nepal and India, and is also the gateway to Simikot, Humla. The city itself is a city of the Terai that shows the cultural diversity of Nepal. In Nepalgunj, we can visit the local market, the mini-zoo, and the neighbouring villages. We will spend the night in Nepalgunj.
On day 4 of our Kailash Tour Via Simikot, we take a 40-minute flight from Nepalgunj to reach Simikot and admire the stunning beauty of the high mountain cliffs from our plane window. Simikot is the capital city of the Humla district, and is isolated from the rest of the country because of its remoteness. At Simkot, we will also discover the local population and their rich culture, which is closely related to Tibetans because of the proximity of the two places. We will also have a short lunch at Simikot. Then from Simikot, we climb for a while, then descend to reach the city of Tuling. We continue to walk through the jungles and villages along the Karnali River till we reach Dharapori. We will spend the night in Dharapori.
On day 5 of our Kailash Tour Via Simkot, our trek today will take place on flat paths that begin with the path alongside the Karnali River. We then walk in fields grown with barley, buckwheat, rice and potatoes. There are also two hot springs near Kermi where we can go and take a relaxing break to relieve our tired bodies. We can also visit the ancient Buddhist monasteries near Kermi - Laikyo Gompa and Lhundrup Choeling Gompa. We will spend the night in Kermi.
On day 6 of our Kailash Tour Via Simikot, today's hike will be a flat and steep climb first to a small pass and then walk past a suspension bridge on the Salli River. From there we can admire the stunning view of the beautiful pine trees and the mighty Karnali River. We will also visit the old monastery of Namkha Khyung Dzong. We will spend the night in Yalbang.
On day 7 of our Kailash Tour Via Simikot, after having breakfast we will walk along a path on the Karnali River. Then slowly began climbing, and as we climb we will start to notice the vegetation slowly beginning to fade out, as are the smaller shrubs, we will walk till we reach our destination for today, which is Tumkot. After arriving in Tumkot, we will visit Dhungkar Choezom Monastery, which is one of the most important Sakya monasteries in the Tibetan region. We will spend the night in Tumkot.
On day 8 of our Kailash Tour Via Simikot, today's hike will take place on a relatively easy path over the Karnali River. After walking a few kilometers on foot, we begin to notice the change of climate, vegetation, and landscape, which becomes even more rocky and isolated than before. The trees you see will now no longer be pines rather short and low junipers. We will trek till we reach Yari and then spend the night there.
On day 9 of our Kailash Tour Via Simkot, we begin our trek by walking to the Nara La pass (4620 m). The vegetation is desolate now and the landscape is similar to that of Tibet. After walking past the pass, we will now have a breath-taking view of the beautiful Tibetan plateau and the village of Yari. From there, we will descend towards Hilsa, which is a border town that is also a base for pilgrims going to Mt. Kailash in the helicopter. We will spend the night in Hilsa.
On day 10 of our Kailash Tour Via Simkot, we will walk past the bridge of friendship in Hilsa, where the Chinese authorities will examine our permits and passports. We also meet up with our Tibetan guide here. Drive from Hilsa to Purang and pass along Rinzin Zangpo Gompa and Kangje Village. In Purang, we visit the ancient Purang Gompa and explore the unique Buddhist frescoes of the twelfth century. We will spend the night in Purang.
On Day 11 of our Kailash Tour via Simikot, we cross the lakes Rakshas and Mansarover to reach Montser. After arriving in Montser, we relax for a while then we visit Tirtapuri (4510m). Located northwest of Mount Kailash, the hot springs of Tirthapuri are closely associated with Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche). Pilgrims bathe in spring-fed pools, visit the monastery containing the guru's trail, and dig for healing stones along an hour-long route. After visiting Tirtapuri, we returned to Montser to spend the night.
On Day 12 of our Kailash Tour via Simikot, we will walk about 2 hours to reach the Garuda Valley, a valley located southwest of Mt. Kailash. It contains mysterious caves, some of which have never been explored. Many believe it was the cradle of Tibetan civilization in the days of Shang Shung kings, long before Buddhism reached the roof of the world. For those interested in archaeological and historical sites, visiting the Garuda Valley will be a dream come true. After visiting the incredible valley, we then will go to Darchen, a small town just across from sacred Kailash Mountain. We will spend the night in Darchen.
On Day 13 of our Kailash Tour via Simikot, today we start the sacred Kora of Mt. Kailash. The first day at Darchen consists of a six-hour walk through a deep valley via red rock walls. We continue across the plain to Shershong. We then walk past a bridge that leads to Chhuku Gompa, which is at the top of the hill visible from the valley. The path leads to Dirapuk from where we will have an amazing view of the north face of the Mt. Kailash. We will spend the night at Dirapuk.
On Day 14 of our Kailash Tour via Simikot, today will be the most difficult part of our Kailash Tour as we continue on our second day of Kora. We will climb the Drolma-la pass at 5,750 m / 19,910 ft. The pass, Drolma-la, whose name literally means Tara’s Pass, is a breathtaking place with five-colored prayer flags fluttering in the wind. From the sacred Drolma-la Pass, we begin our descent toward Dzutul-puk. Here, we encounter the remarkable Thugje Zinbu, which is also known as Compassion Lake, a site that holds great spiritual significance. The area is also home to ancient meditation caves, once used by yogis and spiritual practitioners for deep retreat and reflection. Overnight stay in Dzutul-puk, surrounded by calm energy and mountain silence.
On Day 15 of our Kailash Tour via Simikot, which is also the third and final day of Kora, we gradually ascend out of the valley and make our way toward the plain of Barka, enjoying the views along the route. After completing the sacred Kora of Mt. Kailash at Darchen, we continue on our journey with a two-hour drive to the holy Lake Mansarovar.
This lake holds deep religious significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. In Hindu, Lake Mansarovar is regarded as a symbol of purity, and it is said that anyone who drinks its waters is cleansed of sin and granted a place with the divine after death. In Buddhism, the lake is identified with the mythical Anavatapta Lake, where it is believed Queen Maya conceived Lord Buddha. Surrounded by sacred energy and natural beauty, an overnight stay at Mansarovar provides a peaceful moment of reflection and spiritual connection with the Himalayas.
On day 16 of our Kailash Tour Via Simikot, we drift the beautiful lake Mansarovar, which has a circumference of 90 km, which makes it one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. The belief is that the kora of Mt. Kailash is completed only with a sacred immersion in the lake and a glass of holy water that relieves the sins of one hundred lives. We surround Mansarovar by Jeep and, if the weather permits, we visit Chui Gompa, another attraction of Manasrovar. We will spend the night at Mansarovar.
On day 17 of our Kailash Tour Via Simikot, we will have to travel a long path between Mansarovar and Saga through the historic sacred monastery of Chiu. We continue passing through Hor Quo and the pass of Mayum La (5 200 m). Along the way, we will also have the chance to have a stunning view of small cities such as Zhongba and Paryang on the way. This route covers 270 km from Mansarovar to Paryang and is next to Saga, 255 km from Paryang. From Saga, instead of going to Lhasa, we take a different route to Kathmandu. We will spend the night in the saga.
On day 18 of our Kailash Tour Via Simikot, from Saga we proceed to walk to Shigatse via Latse. Our path will follow the Tsangpo River in an area crisscrossed by the Upper Brahmaputra and its tributaries. Arriving at Shigatse, we will rest for a while and then visit the Tashilhunpo Monastery, which was founded by Pachen Lama in 1447. We will spend the night in Shigatse.
On day 19 of our Kailash Tour Via Simikot, after having breakfast, we head towards Lhasa. On the way, we will visit the monastery of Shalu. Founded in 1040, the Shalu Monastery is known for its beautiful and ancient murals. After the visit, we then continued to Lhasa. On the way, we find the Karo La pass (5,045 m). Before reaching Lhasa, we also cross the Khamba La pass (4794 m) with a short stop to enjoy the beauty of Yamdrok Tso (turquoise lake), one of the three largest sacred lakes in Tibet and the magnificent Nazin Kang Sang glacier (7252 m). We will spend the night in Lhasa.
Day 20 of our Kailash Tour Via Simikot is unfortunately our final day as our exciting, serene and eventful adventure on Kailash in Nepal ends today. There is nothing more for us to do other than exchange emails with other travellers and organize the photos taken during the Kailash Tour. A representative of our Go Nepal Travel Tours and Treks Pvt.
