Over time, as the waters receded, the sacred hill of Swayambhu emerged. Today, this place is not only one of the oldest and most significant religious landmarks in Nepal, but it also has the largest image of Sakyamuni Buddha, which can be found on the western side of the stupa. Around the stupa, there are chaityas, statues, and several Buddhist and Hindu holy sites. The proportions are just right, and the buildings all complement each other nicely. It's a stunning location, with stunning woodwork on the windows and balconies of the buildings.
