The Nar Phu Valley Trek takes you deep into one of the most remote and culturally rich parts of Nepal's Annapurna region. This valley is located northeast of Chame, and is home to the old villages of Nar and Phu, separated by just about a day's walk. This trek provides a rare opportunity to experience untouched Tibetan culture, centuries-old Buddhist monasteries, colorful festivals like Lhosar and Derchi, and traditional lifestyles centered around farming and herding. As you hike through peaceful villages, narrow gorges, and open yak pastures, you’ll also get to enjoy the breathing views of landscapes and walk past thrilling and exciting high suspension bridges.
Along the way, you will also be also rewarded with breathtaking views of snow-capped mountain peaks such as Kangaru Himal (6,981m), Himlung Himal (7,126m), Pisang Peak (6,091m), Chulu East (6,429m), and Annapurna range. Hiking in the Nar Phu Valley takes you to one of Nepal's most beautiful and remote areas of Annapurna. Nar Phu is located in Annapurna's northeast valley, near Chame. Hiking in the Nar Phu Valley will take you through quiet peaceful old villages, narrow beautiful gorges, herds of blue sheep, and a spectacular cliff path over one of the area's highest hiking passes. This land, which is only visited by a few hikers, is still rich in old Tibetan culture, which has been preserved for centuries. This trek is probably the best-known tourist region of the Annapurna hiking routes, with breathtaking mountain views and beautiful landscapes.
Nar Phu Trek provides a rare chance to explore the untouched lifestyle, traditional customs, and hidden culture of mountain communities in a remote corner of the Annapurna region. This trek takes you through wild natural landscapes filled with snow-capped peaks, yak and sheep pastures, and rich flora and fauna. Along the way, trekkers can experience the way of life of the local people there, who celebrate colorful lively festivals like Lhosar, Derchi, and Yakchha, reflecting their deep-rooted Buddhist traditions. We see beautiful picture worthy views of Nepali countryside, lush green forest, rivers, villages, farms and spectacular Mountain views along the way. After about an 8-10 hour drive, we will arrive at Jagat through Besishahar. The road to Besishahar will be smooth and comfortable to drive on due to the black topped roads. But after Besishahar, the roads become dusty and rough and less comfortable, but the overall 360 beautiful view from the vehicle window will largely make up for the bumpy ride. We will spend the night in Jagat.
On day 4 of our Nar Phu Valley Trek, after breakfast, we will slowly start our journey today. The path of Jagat descends towards the river, then crosses a beautiful dense forest. Another climb leads to a steep cliff facing the coast. On the way, Chyamje enters the scene amid the magnificent scenery of the mountain ranges of Annapurna. After walking past a suspension bridge, we climb abruptly towards the slippery and physically difficult road that leads to Sattale. Following a succession of paths made with stones, we descend to a grass bank that leads to Tal. When we move away from Tal, the road becomes rocky and twisting. Then we approached the steep wooded village of Karte. We finally reach Dharapani after walking along the waterfalls and cliffs and then crossing a suspension bridge. We then continue the trek through the forests and quickly climb to Meta village. We finally arrive on the Tibetan plateau where we have a very good view of Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal. We will spend the night in Meta.
On day 7 of our Nar Phu Valley Trek, we begin our day by crossing suspension bridges over different beautiful streams. After almost 4 hours of walking, we arrive at Kyang where we can see the remnants of the old, especially the ruined fortresses of the Khampa colony (the place that Khampa refugees from Tibet once captured and lived). Then we continue to Phu Khola along a rocky road and finally reach the village of Phu in about 3 to 4 hours. We will spend the night in Phu Gaon.
On day 8 of our Nar Phu Valley Trek, we take a much-needed acclimatization day to rest and adjust ourselves to the high altitude. Since we are in the hidden valley of Nar Phu, it’s a perfect opportunity for us to explore the local culture, natural beauty, and religious practices of ethnic groups here like the Lama, Gurung, and Ghale communities. We also learn how the people here depend on agriculture, livestock, and seasonal migration for their livelihoods.
One of the highlights of the day is visiting the Tashi Lakhang Monastery, which is an old and important Buddhist monastery ranked among the 108 greatest Buddhist monasteries in the world. It is believed to be the last monastery built by Karmapa Rinpoche. Along with cultural exploration, we are also treated to the breathtaking views of Himlung Himal and other snow-capped peaks that surround the valley. Tonight also we will stay in the beautiful village of Phu Gaon.

The path follows this valley to the north through a few pastures, juniper, as it gains altitude. The path goes further near the small village of Ghunsa.
Now the path walks past meadows where horses and yaks can be seen grazing. After crossing a small river on a wooden bridge, the path runs along an old wall of Mani in a meadow, then joins another small village of Yak Kharka. We will spend the night at Yak Kharka.
On day 14 of our Nar Phu Valley Trek, we will make our way to Thorong Phedi, which is the base of the Thorong La Pass. Thorong Phedi is a small but busy place that serves tired trekkers and mountaineers. Many hikers, like us, will use this point as a base camp. Some trekkers also attempt to climb a bit higher to High Camp to make the next day's crossing easier. However, to make sure we get a better night's rest and avoid the risks of sleeping at a higher altitude, we will stop and stay overnight at Thorong Phedi.
On day 15 of our Nar Phu Valley Trek, we will cross the difficult Thorong La Pass which is at an impressive height of 5,416 meters and is one of the major highlights of this trek. It’s important for us to start early to safely cross the frozen high-altitude path, but the breathtaking mountain views make the difficult climb worthwhile. By sunset, we will reach Muktinath, which is a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. Here, we can explore the area, visit the famous Vishnu temple and a nearby monastery. We will spend the night in Muktinath.
On day 16 of our Nar Phu Valley Trek, we begin to descend Kali Gandaki gorge through the barren land. We will pass through the villages of Jharkot and Khingar, with Tibetan architecture to admire.
