Why Bandipur could be your next travel destination in Nepal ?
Bandipur, a small Newari town in the hills just eight kilometers from Dumre Bazar and 143 kilometers from Kathmandu, is a highway town on the way to Pokhara that is growing in popularity among domestic and international tourists.
It is popularly known as "Mini-Bhaktapur." Bandipur was historically a popular stop on a busy trade route connecting Tibet and India. It is still part of a major trade route connecting India and western Nepal via Thori of Chitwan. Because Newars from Bhaktapur settled in Bandipur as traders in the 17th century, the town has many ties to Bhaktapur. Bandipur, like all traditional Newari towns, has narrow alleys lined with square cut flagstones that lead to the main town square. At a time when most cities are crowded and noisy, a tourist can find a sense of tranquillity in this town, which is uncommon in Nepal's other urbanised areas.
Durbar Ghar, built 130 years ago, is said to be the oldest house in town, displaying the distinctive Newari architecture. Bindyabasini, a pagoda-style temple, is also highly revered by Bandipur residents. There are also Raniban, Tundikhel, Khadgadevi Temple, Mahalaxmi Temple, and the historic stone spouts known as Teen Dhara. There is also an effigy in the Mahadev's Temple, which was built in the 13th century, according to legend. Because the Newars of Bandipur are descended from Bhaktapur immigrants, every lane and alley in the town has a temple or a shrine — just like the Newark towns of Bhaktapur.
Bandipur, located at an elevation of 1030 meters, straddles one of the crests of the Mahabharat chain of hills that runs across the mid-western mountainous terrain. The Marsyangdi River flows through a deep valley to the north of town, providing a spectacular view. On a clear day, the peaks of Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Annapurna, Lamjung, and Ganesh can be seen from Bandipur. From certain vantage points, the Gorkha Durbar (fort) and the Mankamana ridge (a popular pilgrimage site) are also visible.
Top 10 Reasons Why Bandipur Should Be Your Next Nepal Travel Destination
1. Tundikhel
No, we're not referring to Kathmandu's noisy, dusty streets. Bandipur's Tundikhel could not be any different. Instead of the city pollution of Kathmandu, you get heart-warming views of the Himalayan hills and mountains. The magnificent sight of the green hills of the Mahabharat range nestled in the lap of the high mountains of the Himalayas is truly something to behold. When you stand and take it all in from this magnificent viewpoint, you can also see the Marsyangdi river slithering far below.
2. Architecture
Aside from the beautiful natural scenery, Bandipur is also a great place to see the region's ancient architecture. The Bandipur Newari community has done an excellent job of preserving the old-style homes and temples.
Some of the locations may even appear to be from the ancient city of Bhaktapur. Almost every street in Bandipur has an old and pure aesthetic. When visiting Bandipur, you will not be disappointed by the traditional styles of houses and temples.
3. A respite from Kathmandu's cacophony
Bandipur is not a large city, so the noise levels in and around the area are relatively low when compared to the constant city noises that we experience in the Kathmandu Valley. If you are from the valley or another major city in Nepal, Bandipur will appear to be a very mellow and laid-back place to you. Walking around feels like you're in an old village thanks to the vehicle-free streets.
This makes Bandipur an ideal destination for those looking for a quick getaway from the stresses of everyday life. The locals are very friendly, and the city provides excellent hospitality.
4. Cleanliness
Bandipur was once known as the cleanest city in Nepal. It should come as no surprise that the city's reputation has only grown since then. As much as possible, the city is kept clean and pollution-free. Much of the cleanliness can be attributed to the city's many vehicle-free streets.
Strict regulations prohibiting the use of plastic bags are also beneficial. When it comes to maintaining the city's clean appearance, the residents are very active. As a result, you won't be looking for a face mask like you would in Kathmandu.
5. A few short hikes
It should come as no surprise that this is the case. Every hilly town in Nepal has a number of treks that will take you to a scenic location. Bandipur is no exception. The hills that surround the city are easily accessible for day hikes and offer spectacular views of the Himalayan mountains, the Marsyangdi valley, and the Marsyangdi river.
You can go on hikes in the hills around the city without a guide and have a great time. The fresh, cool air of the hills, bird songs, and breathtaking mountain views will keep you company on your hikes.
6. Not Expensive
Bandipur does not have the same high prices as Kathmandu. Cost, particularly for domestic travelers, can be a deciding factor. You don't need to be concerned about that. The prices for food and lodging are quite reasonable. In a nutshell, the trip to Bandipur will be well worth it.
7. Friendly to Pedestrians
Bandipur is a city with no traffic. Bandipur's roads, or rather pathways, are stone-paved. As a result, strolling through the streets of Bandipur is an absolute delight. Vehicle-free streets are beneficial for a variety of reasons. To begin with, there is very little, if any, pollution, allowing you to breathe freely. Second, you will not be bothered by vehicle honking because there are none.
The streets are also beautifully decorated with flowers and antique ornaments. You will not be disappointed if you take an evening stroll around the city.
8. Experience with a homestay
Bandipur, like many other places in Nepal, has embraced the homestay system. For a day, you can live with the locals as if you were one of them. The genuine experience of a homestay is unparalleled.
Traditional Newari cuisine is served. You will essentially be living like a local. So, if you want to get a true sense of not only the city of Bandipur but also its culture, a homestay is ideal.
9. Cuisine of the Past
Newari cuisine is widely regarded as among the best in Nepal. Bandipur has it all when it comes to food: traditional Newari cuisine. If you've ever enjoyed the food at a Newari restaurant, you'll love what Bandipur has to offer. Every step of the way, street side shops and hotels will tempt you.
10. Stupas and temples
From the Bauddha monastery to the Khadga Devi temple and the Siddha Cave, Bandipur appears to have it all. In the immediate vicinity, there are numerous historic temples, monasteries, and cultural sites.
This city is a fantastic place to learn about Nepali culture. The majority of cultural sites can be visited in a single day and will not disappoint.
These are just a few of the reasons why Bandipur should be your next Nepal vacation destination. But, in all honesty, these ten points do not do the city's true beauty justice. You must go in order to fully appreciate it.
